The Importance of Preventive Care

Wellness exams are critical to helping your pet maintain good long-term physical health.

When combined with routine vaccinations, parasite prevention, and proper nutrition, these wellness examinations include regular physical checkups to give your pet the best chance at excellent lifelong health.

When bringing your cat or dog in for their routine checkup with us, we are given the chance to prevent health issues from developing in your pet and to catch health problems when they are at their most treatable.

Cat & Dog Wellness Exams, Douglasville

What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical

Our Douglasville veterinarians are able to give your cat or dog their physical checkups in order to gain a better picture of their overall health. The routine wellness exams at our animal clinic generally include all of the following elements:

General Condition

Your pet's general condition and demeanor can both provide clues to their overall health. The way your pet stands, walks, and how much they weigh compared to their size, can all be helpful indicators of your companion's overall health.

Coat & Skin

During your dog or cat's checkup, we will examine your pet's skin and coat for signs of problems, including excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff, or abnormal hair loss or shedding.

Face & Head

Your pet's ears, eyes, and nose will all be examined for any abnormalities like discharge. We will also examine your dog or cat's mouth for symptoms of oral health issues like periodontal disease or plaque buildup.

Internal Health

Heart rate and rhythm, pulse, and blood pressure are vitally important to your pet's heart health. We'll test these to ensure they're normal. The lungs will then be examined for evidence of abnormal breathing.

We will check your pet's lymph nodes for any swelling or pain and their abdomen to make sure their stomach, liver, kidneys, and intestines are all in good condition. We will always keep an eye out for any discomfort expressed by your pet.

Review of Findings

At the end of your cat or dog's checkup, your vet will take the time to discuss any concerns they may have about your pet's overall health and talk to you about your dog or cat's nutritional requirements.

Checkups for Puppies & Kittens

Puppies and kittens need proper medical attention in their first few weeks of life to get off to a healthy start.

We will give your newest friend a comprehensive physical exam, appropriate immunizations, deworming treatments, and more. We will also test them for intestinal parasites.

You will be provided with a kitten or puppy "kit" that is filled with educational; materials and samples of products to help you provide the newest member of your family with the best possible care.

Please never hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have about caring for your new pet, both at your appointments or following your visits.

Once your puppy or kitten's checkup is complete, you'll return periodically for his or her required booster shots

Seniors

With recent advances in veterinary medical knowledge and care, as well as newer therapies and better nutrition, senior pets are living longer than ever.

While this is terrific news for pets and their owners, it means that special attention needs to be given to your pet's routine healthcare as they age. As your pet surpasses middle age, regular examinations become increasingly crucial to ensure their continuing health and longevity.

In addition to the routine wellness procedures we perform on all adult pets, we will give special attention to your senior pet's potential geriatric conditions, such as arthritis or decreased vision.

Additional laboratory tests may be recommended for aging pets to provide more detailed information about your senior pet's overall health and wellbeing.

Vaccinations & Prevention

During your pet's vet checkup at our Douglasville animal hospital, our vets will look to see if your pet is due for any preventive care, parasite treatment, or vaccinations.
